Abandoned Property Registration Ordinance

In an effort to curtail the growing problem of abandoned and neglected properties in Hillsborough County, the Board of County Commissioners has enacted the Abandoned Property Registration Ordinance 09-59 that requires lenders to register these properties with Hillsborough County Code Enforcement. The intent of the Ordinance is to maintain a listing of these properties for periodic inspection to ensure compliance with Hillsborough County’s Property Maintenance Code.

Abandoned properties that develop overgrown conditions and have unsecured, accessible structures have a negative impact on community value, create conditions that invite criminal activity, and foster an unsafe and unhealthy environment for children. Therefore, it is critical to maintain abandoned properties to prevent these nuisance conditions.

This Ordinance applies only to properties in the unincorporated areas of Hillsborough County, and only pertains to properties that are abandoned or vacant, and are in some stage of foreclosure. If a property meets these conditions it is the responsibility of the lending institution to perform the following actions:

  • Register the property with Hillsborough County Code Enforcement using the form provided.
  • Designate and retain a local agent responsible for the security and maintenance of the property

The cost for registering each property is $100. More

Your cooperation and participation in this effort is appreciated, and will help create and maintain a safe and healthy community for all residents.

Violators of this Ordinance will be cited by Hillsborough County Code Enforcement and provided an opportunity to complete the registration process. Continued noncompliance may result in legal action to compel compliance. More
