Hillsborough County Honors Charitable Coupon Queen
Clipping coupons is more than a hobby for Melissa Hartmann; it's a passion that has lasted for nearly 40 years. What initially started as a way to help her family save money when she was growing up, Hartmann has now mastered her cost-cutting technique, and she uses it to help others.
Every week, the Osprey Observer advertising executive clips coupons from up to eight Sunday newspapers. She then matches them with sales ads, and collects and donates food and household items to people in need, such as Lithia residents who were without power during Hurricane Irma. The 2016 Honorary Mayor of Riverview takes pleasure in giving to people she doesn't know, and making a difference in their lives.
Melissa Hartmann was recognized for her accomplishments by the Board of County Commissioners during the July 18 meeting. While accepting the commendation, Hartmann stressed the importance of giving back.
"I always say I'm not rich in money, but I am rich in skills. And anybody who coupons should be giving back," She said. "It's just something I do. I don't look for recognition. It's just what should be done when people coupon."
The Board of County Commissioners also presented a proclamation declaring July 27, 2018, as Americans with Disabilities Act Awareness Day in Hillsborough County.
