DIY Deck the Halls

From books on crafting and cooking, to free classes on making beautiful gifts and holiday keepsakes, libraries have you covered

Looking for a unique gift for that special person on your list who has everything? How about a one-of-a-kind holiday decoration that you can't find in a store? Call on your inner creative elf with a little help from the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative and one of many free do-it-yourself classes scheduled in December. All materials are provided. Or, check out a holiday craft book or cookbook.

Here's a sampling of classes:

DIY Dahlia Wreath - Monday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m., Charles J. Fendig Public Library, 3909 W. Neptune St. in Tampa. Recycle and re-purpose old books to make this unusual wreath. For teens and adults; limited to 12 participants. Register by calling (813) 273-3652 and ask for the Fendig Library, or through the calendar feature at HCPLC.org

Water Bottle Penguin Craft - Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 3:30 p.m., John F. Germany Public Library, The Hive, 900 N. Ashley Drive in Tampa. Kids get a chance to combine technology and traditional arts and crafts skills to make this adorable critter. Recommended for ages 5 and up.

Holiday Projects with Microsoft Publisher - Friday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m., North Tampa Branch Library, 8916 N. Boulevard in Tampa. Learn how to create holiday-themed projects such as greeting cards and event flyers using Microsoft Publisher templates. For adults. Participants are encouraged to bring a flash drive to save their work.

Crafts for Kids: Holiday Cards - Thursday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m., Bloomingdale Regional Public Library, 1906 Bloomingdale Ave. Kids are invited to bring their imagination and make cards for their loved ones.

Stressless Holiday Entertaining - Monday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. at Maureen B. Gauzza Public Library, 11211 Countryway Blvd. in Tampa; Monday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Seminole Heights Branch Library, 4711 Central Ave. in Tampa; Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Town 'N Country Regional Public Library, 7606 Paula Drive, Ste. 120 in Tampa. Chef Warren Caterson will offer tips and demonstrate how to make hors d'oeuvres and small plates that are fast, simple, inexpensive, and yummy.
