Artists Craft Treasures from Trash

Recycled Yard Art Contest awards creativity and promotes environmental awareness

Three artists with robust imaginations of what can be created using scrap materials earned top honors at the recent Recycled Yard Art Contest at the Hillsborough County Fair. Their unique works, on display through Dec. 4 at the Hillsborough County Extension office, 5339 County Road 579 in Seffner, were the winning entries in three categories.

The contest's goal is to spur creativity and increase environmental awareness by challenging residents to fashion yard art from recycled items. The competition is one of two sponsored each year by the Extension office. The next one takes place at the Florida State Fair in February.

Here are the winners:

  • People's Choice Award: Jim Dreby's Yard Minion, fashioned using scrap muffler tubing, an air tank, kids' boots and belt, a tank cover, and an auto engine pulley.

  • Judges' Choice Award: Margaret Thompson's *Dishes Garden*, crafted with dishes and glassware to look like flowers in a garden.

  • Middle School Award: Eliana Holt's Bird Bungalow, created using coffee cans, wooden pallets, a corrugated plastic sheet, and a fence post.
