Hoops Heaven: Apollo Beach
The results are in, and the winner is… Apollo Beach Recreation Center.
The pickup basketball hub at 664 Golf and Sea Blvd. beat out Northdale Recreation Center in the "Rep Your Rec" Twitter poll conducted by Hillsborough County government. The poll's query: "Tell us which Community Center is your fav for pickup b-ball and why."
Apollo Beach Rec led the 16-team field, taking 57 percent of votes in the championship match-up. Northdale Rec, at 15550 Spring Pine Drive, had the highest percentage of votes in the final-four semifinals, but garnered a distant 43 percent in the championship.
Apollo Beach Rec has two lighted, outdoor, concrete courts. Some South County hoops fans prefer the indoor wooden floors at nearby Gardenville and Ruskin recreation centers. But the more spartan facilities at Apollo Beach rec are a larger draw.
The heavily-used courts are popular with boys and girls, men and women. Teens and adults play full-court pickup games throughout the week, interspersed with occasional half-court contests and lone players working on their moves. Adult-league players practice at Apollo Beach Rec, and Leonard and East Bay high school students make it their hoops home.
The courts are occupied seven days a week, from morning until the lights go out at 10 p.m.Find a recreation center
