County Veterans Population Soars to Highest in Florida

U.S. Veterans Affairs expended $1.1 billion in federal benefits locally in FY 2016

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Aug. 9, 2017) - Hillsborough County's military veterans are regarded by our community as tops, and now their numbers are at the top in Florida as well.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that in their fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2016, Hillsborough County had the most veterans of any county in Florida: 98,307, an increase of 5,135 over 2015. The number doesn't reflect thousands of active-duty servicemen and servicewomen who also live here. By comparison, Duval County had 91,296 veterans, and Pinellas had 90,533.

In addition, Hillsborough remained first in the state in the amount of federal veterans' compensation and pension benefits: $490 million in FY 2016, an increase of $64 million over the previous year.

According to the report, the VA expended more than $1.1 billion in benefits and programs in Hillsborough in FY 2016. Here's how it breaks down:

  • Compensation and pension: $490,033,000
  • Construction: $14,944,000
  • Education and vocational rehabilitation/employment: $118,979,000
  • General operating expenses: $5,998,000
  • Insurance and indemnities: $8,798,000
  • Medical care: $476,061,000
