The County's Hazard Mitigation Section in the Planning and Growth Management Department is requesting public input from residents on its draft updated Local Mitigation Strategy Plan. The County is completing its major review and update that is required every five years. The County is required by the State to maintain a Local Mitigation Strategy in order to receive disaster mitigation grant funds.
The Plan is a document that identifies local vulnerability to natural hazards, such as flooding and wildfires; assesses risks for all of Hillsborough County, including Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City; and details government projects to mitigate or reduce those vulnerabilities.
The County has received approximately eight million dollars in grants over the last ten years for hazard mitigation projects, such as helping harden Tampa General Hospital, buying up flood-prone properties and elevating flood-prone structures, assisting with citizen training programs such as CERT, and conducting studies to better understand flooding problems in the County.
A public comment opportunity will be held from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Emergency Operations Center at 2711 E. Hanna Ave., Tampa. The comment opportunity will be followed by a Local Mitigation Strategy Working Group meeting at 2 p.m. The public is also invited to attend this meeting.
The public additionally can send their comments to: Hillsborough County Hazard Mitigation Section, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., 19th Floor, Tampa, 33601.
