Aging Services recently partnered with Tampa's Museum of Science and Industry, MOSI, to present a program on Florida-friendly butterfly gardening. Seniors enjoyed a presentation on the lifecycle of butterflies and learned about their importance in the native environment as pollinators. Seniors got a close-up look at caterpillars, chrysalis, and butterflies. MOSI left the senior centers with a box of Painted Lady caterpillars, that will be released into the new butterfly gardens after seniors have witnessed the butterfly's metamorphosis.
The program was sponsored by a Community Education Grant from the Southwest Florida Water Management District, SWFWMD, in order to educate the public about water conservation and Florida-friendly plants. MOSI planted a beautiful butterfly garden at the Westshore and Brandon Senior Centers. MOSI usually presents this program to children, but they recognized the importance of educating seniors, who may be taken more seriously when they go home and tell their families about water-wise gardening.
